Joe Oppedisano

A few years later, his nostalgia for Europe won him over and he moved to Milan, where he worked on advertising campaigns for internationally renowned brands such as Adidas, Kodak, Fiat, Panasonic, Olivetti, to name just a few. With surprising inventiveness, he produces work that roams freely within the vast territory of photography and embarks on an impossible task: to make cinema within a still image. He combines the imagination of the Mediterranean South, where he was born, with the pragmatism of the American West, where he was trained. His artistic curriculum, inaugurated with an exhibition at the Atlantic Savings Bank in New York in 1978, includes around forty solo exhibitions in New York, Milan, Turin, Arles, Paris, Tokyo, Switzerland, and about sixty group exhibitions in Italy, the United States, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, culminating in his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1995, where he was invited by the Alinari Museum of Florence to take part in the exhibition “A Century of Portraits in Italy 1895-1995”. In 2005, he was invited to participate in the major group exhibition “60 Master Photographers” at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice. Since 2007, he has taught portraiture at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. Since 2010, he has been invited to teach a specialized course on portraiture at ISIA in Urbino, and since 2019, he has been teaching at the Academy of Genoa.
